The ATR 72 was developed from the successful ATR 42 to increase seating capacity and power. The plane made its maiden flight in 1988, with Finnair becoming one of 408 customers by 1989. One year later, exactly on October 27th (1988), orders were pending for a total of 28 more planes due for delivery – their passengers boarding through the rear door!
