Cockburn Town is located in the south-eastern part of Grand Turk Island. Cockburn Town is small and has a population of about 2,000 people. It is ideally located on the southern end of the island. The town was first settled in 1799 by Eleuthera’s white Loyalists who moved to the shores after their homeland was sold to America. These people named the village Cockburn Town after Lord Viscount Charles Stuart, commonly known as “Fighting Charlie”.
The weather in Cockburn Town in summer is warm and the weather is much warmer than any other place situated on Grand Turk Island. The onset of Winter can cause cool winds to blow in from the north and northwest, but it rarely gets too cold. The monthly average temperature ranges between 76°F (24°C) to 83°F (28°C).
