The Fokker 100 is a medium-size twin-turbofan airliner from the Dutch company, Fokker. The low operational costs and scant competition in the 100 seat short range class led to strong sales when it was introduced in 1988 but by 1997 production had ended with 283 airframes delivered as airlines began buying more expensive aircraft such as Boeings or Airbuses which offered better efficiency for long haul flights. In July 2012 there were 156 of these planes left around world mainly operated by smaller carriers who still appreciated their cost effectiveness on shorter routes that were less than 400 miles long where they could offer lots of seats at competitive prices while other types like Boeing 777s would be too costly because they have fewer fuel efficient engines even though those engines
