The evolution of the Swearingen Merlin turboprop powered business aircraft started in Texas when Ed Swearingen gradually modified his Beechcraft Twin Bonanza and Queen Air into what would become Excalibur planes – becoming one of the first owners to have their own versions certified under FAR Part 23 regulations (amendment 34).
